Thursday Dinner

This summer we are preparing to make some changes for the 2011-2012 school year. One of those changes is deciding that luncheon needs to be revamped. After much discussion, we're moving luncheon from Wednesdays at 12:20 to dinner every first and third Thursday at 6:15. As a staff we are very excited about this move and hope you'll join in our excitement!

We believe by changing Wednesday luncheon to a dinner before 707 will provide students with another tool to invite friends to join them for worship. They'll be able to come get a home cooked meal for $1 and then stay for a night of worship.

By having the dinner every first and third Thursday instead of weekly, churches will only need to provide a meal once a school year as opposed to once a semester. With the meal being in the evening, more church members will be able to attend and eat with our students, thus providing opportunities for discipleship. We also are encouraging churches to bring their 11th and 12th grade students with them and allow them to stay for 707. This will provide the chance for them to set foot in a campus ministry so that when they attend college they will be more comfortable going into a campus ministry building.

We're looking forward to seeing how Thursday Dinner will enhance our ministry on this campus this fall!

Family Group Bible Studies

The BCM is making some major changes for the school year 2011-12. One of those changes is the way that we structure our small groups. We've asked and listened to many students about what they would like about the current set up and what they would like to see differently. We've decided to change the structure of small groups for several reasons and believe this is the direction that the Spirit is calling us.

We are going to switch from single gender small groups to coed small groups. We are looking forward to seeing students challenge each other in this environment. There will still be opportunity for the groups to split into single gender to meet for Bible study and/or prayer. We desire to see accountability and maybe even some smaller discipleship groups form out of the larger group. The groups will have both a male and a female leader who will serve as facilitators of the discussion, will give different view points and give each gender a chance to learn from the other.

We are hoping to pair a couple from the local community with each group. We pray that pairing a couple with each group will bring new wisdom and a chance for connecting and discipleship within our community. Our desire is for the couple to occasionally host the group in their home and to serve as mentors to the group as a couple.

We are planning to continue to have Freshmen Mentors placed into each group. This is something that we began incorporating last year. The goal of the Freshmen Mentors is to help freshmen become acclimated to college. They will achieve this by inviting them to a meal, to attend events at the B and on campus, take them out for coffee, etc. This position will end near the end of September, obviously however the Freshmen Mentors can continue to invest in the freshmen.

As a staff we are very excited about this change. We look forward to seeing how the Lord is going to use this change to help us equip the believers involved in our ministry and to reach the non-believers on our campus. Pray for us as we begin to interview students for these positions.

Awakening - All Campus Sing 2011

The BCM participated in the 53rd Annual All Campus Sing (ACS) hosted by Sigma Alpha Iota. This is the second year in a row the BCM has performed in ACS after several years of not having a group. However, the past 2 years there have been over 40 students involved in each of the performances.

The heart of the BCM being involved with ACS has been to use the performance as a chance to be a voice for those in need. Last year the theme of their performance was aids/HIV awareness in Africa. This year they chose to be the voices of the 27+ million people caught in human sex trafficking around the world. Their 5 minute performance included songs by W.P.A., Natasha Bedingfield, Justin Dillon, and Switchfoot. Each of the songs featured were used in a documentary titled Call + Response that helped to inspire this year's theme of Awakening.

For the second year in a row, the BCM brought home 2nd place in the independent division. They were awarded a certificate of participation, a trophy, and a check for $300. The team had already decided that if they won any money that they would donate it to MakeWay Foundation at Murray State. MakeWay serves to work against human trafficking and other forms of mondern-day human slavery in the U.S. and around the world. If you are interested in viewing the documentary Call + Response, there will be a viewing at the Curris Center Theater at Murray State on Monday, April 25 at 6:30pm. This is a free event to all.

We sure are proud of the students that participated on Wednesday and thankful that they were willing to take a stand. Below are a few pictures of the performance!

5 Days till Beach Reach!

Hey Everybody,

Hopefully this blog will be another great way for you to keep in contact with us at the Murray State Baptist Campus Ministry.

From a student's point of view, I cannot wait for spring break. It's only 5 days away! Though I am super stoked about not being in class and being able to get projects, tests, and deadlines off my mind, I'm the most excited about spending the break in Panama City at Beach Reach.

Beach Reach is a great missions opportunity for college students to reach out to our peers in Panama City. I will be in Panama City next week and I will be blogging and posting pictures and videos of our experience there and the AMAZING things I know God has in store for us.

We also have another team from the BCM going to St. Louis to do some mission work over break and we're excited to see what God has for them to do there.
